Pope Francis announced absolution in connection with the pandemic to all those who repented during the year. Forgiveness of sins is granted "to those who have repented and with the intention, as soon as possible, to fulfill three conditions, whether at home or in another place of forced stay - confession, communion and prayer." This, as reported by TASS, is stated in a special decree, which establishes a special year dedicated to St. Joseph. The decree was published by the Apostolic Penitentiary (one of the three tribunals of the Holy See, which is in charge of indulgences).
Usually, the Catholic Church forgoes sins en masse in the so-called jubilee years, which take place every 25 years. Popes from time to time announce extraordinary anniversary years. So, Francis announced an extraordinary jubilee year of mercy, which lasted from December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016.
Earlier this year, according to the decree of the Apostolic Penitentiary, sins were already forgiven for patients with coronavirus and doctors.
"In the current context of a sanitary emergency, the granting of indulgences especially applies to the elderly, the sick, the dying and suffering, and those who, for valid reasons, cannot leave their homes," the decree also says.
The Pontiff also recalled that among the people of St. Joseph is considered "the patron saint of good death."
In the sermon, which Francis delivered on Tuesday on the occasion of the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, the pontiff noted the need to comply with all the rules and regulations established by the authorities to prevent the spread of coronavirus. He explained that it was in order to prevent large gatherings that it was decided to abandon his traditional trip in the afternoon to Plaza de Espana to lay a wreath at the statue of Our Lady.
Francis did this unexpectedly early in the morning, while there was no one on the streets of the city. "But this does not prevent us from giving the Mother of God the flowers that are most valuable to her: prayer, a manifestation of mercy and a heart open to forgiveness," Francis said.
According to the decision of the Italian government, Christmas masses will be held in the churches of the country until 22:00 instead of midnight.
Countdown of the year of St. Joseph began on Tuesday, the day of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and will end on December 8, 2021.
The Pontiff made his decision in connection with the 150th anniversary of the signing by Pope Pius IX of the decree according to which St. Joseph was declared the patron saint of the Catholic Church. This is reported in a special decree granting special indulgences to believers on the occasion of the Year of St. Joseph, which was published on Tuesday by the Apostolic Penitentiary (one of the three tribunals of the Holy See).
On this occasion, Pope Francis sent the Apostolic Epistle Patris Corde ("Father's Heart") to the faithful, the text of which was also made public on Tuesday by the Holy See. In this document, the pontiff noted the special role of Joseph, the betrothed husband of the Mother of God, in the gospel story.
At the same time, Pope Francis noted that no other saint except the Virgin Mary herself had attracted such attention from his predecessors on the Apostolic See. At one time, Pope Pius IX proclaimed him the patron saint of the Catholic Church, Pius XII recognized him as the patron of the working people, and John Paul II called him "the Savior's guardian."
The Pontiff stressed that Joseph loved Christ "with the heart of his father" and drew attention to the fact that the authors of all four Gospels call Jesus "the son of Joseph".
