In Brazil, members of a criminal group took several people hostage during a bank robbery in the city of Arasatuba. This is reported by the BBC. A video from the scene of the events was published on Twitter by a local journalist Yuri Macri (Yuri Macri).
The recording shows that the robbers tied the hostages to the cars in which they were hiding from the police. Criminals used citizens as a human shield from the attacks of law enforcement officers in the process of escape. The hostages were secured on the roof and on the hood of the cars. Shots can also be heard on the video.
The mayor of the city, Dilador Borges, said that the police tried to stop the intruders, but were limited in their actions. "The police could not attack the criminals and confront them, because there were too many lives at stake," he stressed. The politician called on all residents of Arasatuba to stay at home, as members of the groups could have planted explosive devices on the streets.
According to the BBC, in recent years, cases of the use of hostages as human shields in clashes between members of criminal organizations and security forces have become more frequent in Brazil. Often such situations lead to civilian casualties.
Earlier, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro called on every citizen of the country to buy a rifle. He said that opponents of the free sale of weapons in Brazil should stop making claims against buyers of gun stores. Earlier, Bolsonaro made attempts to change Brazilian legislation so that more residents could purchase weapons.
