The Japanese vessel did not move during the collision with the Russian trawler "Amur" near the Japanese island of Hokkaido. Such new details of the incident were shared by one of the surviving Japanese sailors, his words are quoted by the Kyodo news agency.
According to him, at the time of the accident, the Japanese schooner "Dai-hachi Hokko-maru" was working and therefore was anchored.
The tragedy occurred at 6: 00 local time (midnight Moscow time) near the Japanese city of Mombetsu. Due to the collision, the Japanese ship capsized. Three fishermen on board died, while the other five were rescued by the Russian crew. No one was injured on the Russian ship.
Russian Consul General in Sapporo Sergey Markin said that the Russian and Japanese vessels could collide due to heavy fog. According to him, the crew of the Russian trawler could not notice the small fishing schooner.
