Germany appreciated the US decision not to impose sanctions against the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. This was stated by Waldemar Gerd, a member of the Bundestag Committee on International Affairs from the Alternative for Germany party, RIA Novosti reports.
The politician noted that the American side finally heard the opinion of Germany and took into account its national interests. He concluded that the country was able to fight back against a transatlantic partner for the first time since the Second World War.
"Fortunately, in the United States, there are now sober heads who have started to think more pragmatically about the future world order, "Gerd said, and stressed that Nord Stream 2 will be completed, as it is necessary for the German economy. The politician noted that the American pressure on the country on this issue is meaningless.
According to Gerd, Germany remains "far from an equal partner" in relations with the United States. He added that Washington has no strong arguments against the gas pipeline project, and if the pressure continues, the German political course may become more pro-Russian.
Earlier, the US State Department confirmed the rejection of sanctions against the Nord Stream-2 pipeline. It was reported that the gas pipeline is an activity that could be restricted, but the administration of President Joe Biden decided not to do this. This decision was explained by the national interests of Washington.
